Haha Chrissyboy,

I guess dorkiness is subjective - and sometimes there's a fine line between looking dorky and interesting...

Here's a guy in an old school textile (Belstaff) who might be on the more interesting end of the spectrum...

leather jackets are practical, you can wear it to ride into town then quite happily walk round with it on. Try doing that in a textile jacket full of armour and not looking like a "dork" as you put it.

You dont know nuffin!

That's cool - I'm going to take a trip to the D-Store when I'm in California in a couple of weeks to take a look for myself!

Although I wonder, around other sport bikers if there's a reverse jacket effect. Instead of non-motorcycling friends asking about your leather - you'll have bikers asking "Dude what's up with the blazer?"

Update: So I picked up the Dainese Milano Evo Sports Coat thing. It rocks. This jacket toally nullifies the "wearing your motorcycle jacket out" thing. Not only is is fully padded and abrasion resistant, it looks great according to any standad. Highly recommend checking this thing out.

Second, as I sit typing this, the Fed-Ex guy just dropped off the free back armor upgrade that came with my Vanson. So stoked. I half expected I would never see it. Good times in the jacket department this month.

Yeah our lawyers are in the process of suing them for trademark infringement... not! I like that they're thinking in that direction.

The Dainese blazer (link above) is a cool idea. If I saw one in my size, I might have gotten it.

The nice thing about the Vanson though - or any basic leather motorcycle jacket, aside from the great protection, is that it looks better every year as it breaks in... whereas a blazer (any blazer) doesn't hold up quite as long.

I just bought a new Vanson, and it IS pretty cool. No, I don't wear it down to the pub just for looks, but when I hop off my bike, I sure as S**t ain't leaving it behind. So my only choice is to wear it sometimes. I think a caveat is that it is ok if, say, you are still carrying your helmet. This was something friends razzed me on even before I owned a bike or a jacket. "Just don't become one of those guys who wears his jacket everywhere" I guess its a pretty common sentiment.

Oh, and by the way, since this is the CityBiker blog, and we are talking about jackets VS fashion, Dainese just released a really cool line called...(drumroll) 'City Biker' I just ordered a Milano Evo. Basically its all the lines of a regular sports coat with shoulder, elbow and back pads. They look really good too. They come in Black, grey and brown corduroy. I wouldn't take it on the freeway, but damn if I don't wear it to work. I saw them in person and I can tell you they look better than this photo (no I don't work for them in any capacity). Cheers!

Haha - I actually wear my jacket after I park (when I go somewhere with the bike)... So wasn't saying it shouldn't be done - but that you should only do it if you REALLY don't care :) which our readers obviously do.

As for Tom - Tom we know you're out there man...we know you've been held hostage in some spaceship by John Travolta - that robotic clone they're trying to pass off as you can't fool us. And when you get out, please please let us take a spin on your Ducati RR - we'll be good, we promise.

Excellent article, although I would like to point out that Tom Cruise looks like a crazy a-h these days no matter what he is wearing. ;) I get lots of compliments on my jacket, but I never wear it when I am not riding. Same reason I don't wear a shirt and tie to the pool or my swim trunks to work - I would look out of place.

Yeah, I'm with Sanka. I wasn't sure if you were telling people not wear jackets or to wear them. I for one never get on a bike without one. But I don't always take it off just to go into wal-mart either. I also have never had anyone tell me I look like a dork in it just because I'm not on my motorcycle. They usually compliment my gear and start talking motorcycles with me. I don't mind that one bit. I love it. I don't think I look like a dorky a-hole scumbag mid-life crisis bearing mo fo. I've never really met anyone that has. But, I guess thats your opinion. No shame in that. But on the other hand I do like all the extra info you gave on the jackets. I does make a difference on selection for comfort, appearance, and coolness. Whether being cold cool, or awesome cool.
