Useful Tip: Checking the Weather
Aug 4th, 2008 by Leo

There you are ready to go out on a Saturday night on your bike. And what do you see in the distance? Was that lightning? It had rained all morning, and the weather man said there would be intermittent rain all day… So what do you do? Do you take the bike and risk the chance of being soaked in a NY tsunami, or leave an hour earlier to take the subways or buses?
Here’s a tip, be your own weather man/woman. It’s funny the things you learn to do once you start riding… I think I’ve gotten pretty good at predicting the weather in my little neck of the planet… How you ask? By checking the local weather radar:

First check the local radar map for what’s directly in your neighborhood. Those signs of lightning might just be a passing remnant of a storm (the way it was this past weekend). And the figure out what the next few hours might bring, check the national map to see what’s coming your way. The weather patterns just about always move from West to East (probably because of the direction the earth spins), so it doesn’t take long to figure out short term predictions. Between the local and national maps you can pretty much figure what the weather will be like in the next 6-12 hours…and unlike your local weather station, you can figure out if it’s going to rain in Jersey, but not Manhattan, or Manhattan but not Queens or Brooklyn. This way you can always be prepared. Cheers!
PS – You can always find the link to the weather radar in the “Tools” section on the right of the page. ——–>
