The Future of NY?
Jun 9th, 2009 by Leo

Well it COULD be… Jesse was good enough to post this under comments but it deserves more visibility: There’s a city council hearing Thursday 11AM regarding “Intro 980,” a bill to compel the DOT to devise a plan for motorcycle & scooter parking. Here are some details. And Jesse says:
FYI: I’ll be there, and will speak. My intent will be to say that 980 is a good start, but needs to go further. Specifically, that motorcycles and scooters need street parking separate from automobiles, due to their small weight and size (and resultant susceptibility to damage and theft). I will be pushing for a San Francisco style plan.
To give you an idea of what parking in NY COULD be like, here’s the link Jesse gave to some pics from San Francisco, one of which I stole and put up top. So if you can get out there, go represent and give Jesse some thanks! Cheers!
Thanks to my friend Derek for taking those awesome pictures of SF.
BTW: Notice that NOT ONE bike has a cover on it? I cover my bike when I park — not because I’m some anal-retentive! It’s a standard part of my attempt at damage/theft avoidance. (Alarm+Disc lock+Cover + Cover lock! = Maybe my bike will be in one piece when I get back.)
BTW, thanks to an ADV FF in London pics of their parking situation, which seems *very* compatible w/ NYC:

Ooh, That lock rail behind the bikes is amazing. I wish we had those in SF! I think I might push for those, if our state ever has money again.

Hi Leo. What was the outcome of the mc parking proposal?
I don’t know what the outcome of the proposal was. Usually, the best case scenario is if it’s forwarded to a committee for review – at which point it won’t be brought up again for a year or so until the committee has a recommendation. Otherwise it would be tabled. It wouldn’t be brought up to a vote unless the person presenting the bill knew it stood a chance of passing or until it was approved by a committee… Usually a couple of years after it’s introduced.
So anyone know the status?
I’m a rider in Oakland Calif. The city here has the same kind of meter as your Muni-Meter and it causes the same problem–there’s no safe place to put the meter receipt. See my posts on MotoNYC (http://www.motonyc.com/): Parking at Muni-Meters.
Good luck at the City Council hearing. Please keep this blog posted on the issue.
There’s no news really, but for a discussion on the city council meeting here’s some chitchat from nyscooterclub:
