I thought 110 was the speed limit…

This is not me by the way – and yes it’s obviously sped up at parts, but it’s a nice video of a ride through 110… It’s pretty much how I remember it: Lots of traffic, but just enough space for bikes to get by.
Enough daydreaming. Back to work!

AH, the 110 fwy. One of the best and simultaneously worst freeways to ride down in L.A. What the video above captures is what I’d say is the most hectic, but ultimately one of the best examples of why it’s better to be on a bike on that stretch between USC/Exposition Park and Dodger Stadium. Further south of that, towards the ports in San Pedro and Long Beach, it’s more open traffic-wise, BUT the freeway is so warped from the constant big rig traffic that it’s the closest you come to riding on 6-8 miles of concrete washboard. You know how your voice sounds when you sing or talk directly into a house fan? You get the same effect talking or singing in you helmet on that stretch of the 110, plus the added effect of blurred vision from the vibration.
Now, heading further north than where the video ends, after the 110 meets the 5 fwy, it’s the closest thing to highway slalom you’ll find in an American urban environment: 3 lanes of banking, short and wide twisty freeway for about 9 miles till it ends in Pasadena. THAT’S the best part of the 110.
(FYI, Californians refer to freeway/highways with a “the” before the number. Ex: “The 110…the 5…the 605″ etc. Not sayin’ it’s better or more right than just using the number, but just sayin’ it “is” how it’s done here; the whacky folks that we are.)
