DIY: removing the rear wheel
May 25th, 2010 by Leo
Anything DIY is a little more challenging if you live in an apartment building, but if you have friends you can often borrow a garage space for a few hours so you can pop your bike up on stands. Or, if you live on a quiet block, you can have a friend sit around and guard your bike while you have the wheels off.
Why would you need to remove the rear wheel? The main reason is to change the tire. You will save a bit of moolah by taking just the wheels to get a tire changed. And after you see how easy it is, the next step is to get one of these and change your own tire in your living room.
A note on the video: it’s way EASIER than this for most motorcycles. So the bike in the video is a kind-of a ‘worst case scenario.’ If you think you can handle this, then you can do it for your bike. Some random tips: I usually undo the rear brake first (just one bolt on mine – swings up off the disk), then undo the one main bolt (no cotter pin on most sportbikes), and the shaft slides out (no banging or pulling necessary) and the wheel is free. The whole process takes me (maybe) 5-10 minutes.
What about the front wheel? The front wheel is even easier…
