Would it be better without electronics? [editorial]

I’m one of those people who think there should be a special Olympics for steroid users… Why not see just how freakin’ awesome humans can be pumped up on the best drugs science can offer? Except for the part where it might kill the athletes, it’s a great idea! But why not do the same when it comes to motor racing? Why not use all the technology available to make the best and easiest to ride bikes and race them at insane speeds? Well…because… Because the fun of “real racing” is that every person on the field has pretty much the same machine, pretty much the same tires, pretty much the same chances of winning – and yet the rider with real skill will wind up twenty seconds ahead of the ones with less… That’s like magic: it’s giving us the opportunity to see what difference a rider can really make and advance riding technology. So what’ll it be? Would you rather watch real racing without electronics or the full blown steroid Olympics? I can see the benefits of both…what do you think?

There already is a special Olympics for steroid users. It’s called the Olympic Games…
I like the idea of maximum technology in racing. The problem though, is that it becomes so cost prohibitive it ends up ruining the entertainment aspect of the sport. (*cough* MotoGP)
Electronics are coming in to compensate for lack of skill and to increase driveability across the board, it is inevitable. Especially on road bikes, security enhancing technology is a fine thing – ABS and traction control both make sense, with ABS by far the most crucial since that helps everybody, seasoned pro or rank amateur, to stop faster and in shorter distances. That’s been tried, even the seasoned pros couldn’t outperform the ABS with any consistency.
I also don’t like that whole ad, it’s basically an invitation to GSXR-pilots to go out and drive like loons (as if they don’t already) – “the limit lies with me? Yeehaw! Ooops, wire fence at 250 kph…”
But on the track…? I suppose it depends. The problem with tech that makes you go faster is that when the tech fails, the remainder of the vehicle is uncontrollable. That’s what happened some decades back in F1 when they added side skirts to the cars – they essentially became huge suction cups that could be driven at stupid speeds around corners, right until the tech failed and the car became a missile. That’s why F1 cars don’t go as fast as they could – they just got so fast that it was instadeath if things went wrong. Perhaps the same phenomenon might happen with bikes with no limits on the bells and whistles?
Actually we can’t think our life without electronics. Now a day it has become a part and parcel of our life. Otherwise, it made our life easy and comfortable than ever before. Lot of thanks for the crucial sharing. Thanks again.
